Personal Learning Environment (PLE) are basically set learning goals. The students decide what they want to learn, and how. The learner manages the content and the process of what they want to learn. The students are also able to communicate with other students from around the globe while they are in the process of learning. The personal learning environment is an electronic environment that allows someone to learn with the available resources. For some, a personal learning environment can consist of online resources such a blog, forum, or a specific web page. It can also consist of some sort of program or software. A PLE (Personal Learning Environment) can be as simple as a browser that has been configured with browser buttons and add ons to make one's learning more efficient.
" The heart of the concept of the PLE is that it is a tool that allows a learner (or anyone) to engage in a distributed environment consisting of a network of people, services and resources. It is not just web 2.0, but it is certainly web 2.0 in the sense that it is (in the broadest sense possible) a read-write application.” (Downes, 2006)

I agree with your comments about a PLE. I am coming more and more comfortable with the concept and believe that this is how it should be - particularly since I spend a great deal of time working and studying using the computer. To assist in my organising of all of the above I have created a visual (mind) map using the following. http://www.visual-mind.com/index.html
take a look

Hi Raghda,
I like your starting point for a PLE.
do you find that with VELS, the IT skills are weakened across the school?
For example, Year 8 teachers are expected to cover graphs using excel, but when they are behind time, they just skip over that part?
Regards, Bill Oldham
Hi Ragdha.
Good to see you have a blog.
I've added you to Ben's Blog now.

VLE should strengthen IT skills rather than weaken them. I guess I see the place of VLE as being more subject focused -ie History/Geography/English/Science etc -and ICT remaining with a skills focus. It is important that we don't abandon the teaching of ICT skills completely!!
Thanks to everyones great comments and feedback.
Sue I believe the mind map is an excellent tool to use as a PLE to gather information, reflect on it and do something with it, using the combination of formal and informal tools is essential for learning. I would divide my information in three areas when considering a mind map.
1. Gather Information 2. Process information 3. Acting on the learning
Bill I think VELS should actually enhance the use of IT skills in schools as the standards include the integration of other subjects but with the facilitation of IT as well. Many schools are finding this unreliable because many teachers need training prior to undertaking VELs (reason for skipping parts) as in at school PDs are held for this reason i.e. interactive whiteboards
Ben I have also added your blog to my blog. Thanks.
